Young Carers

Who are young carers?

A young carer is a child under the age of 18 who provides care for, helps to provide care for, or intends to provide care for another person of any age at home. This could be due to:

  • Disability
  • Special educational needs
  • Mental health condition
  • Substance misuse
  • Age

Some ways young carers provide care include:
-Practical Tasks
-Emotional support
-Personal care
-Managing budgets
-Giving medicine
-Helping with communication
-Supporting siblings

What we do at St Andrews School

St Andrews School is committed to supporting young carers without judgement. We recognise and support our young carers by:
Identifying young carers within our school community, this is achieved with a whole-school approach including staff development, working with families, targeted school support and Young Carer Voice.
Having a designated member of staff to support young carers; our Young Carer Champions is Mrs Mac.
Running monthly drop-in sessions for our young carers.
Offering termly group meetings to get young carers together and do something fun.
Having a dedicated Young Carers Teams, where the Champions can share information with young carers.
Having a dedicated email address where the champions can be contacted by young carers or their parents/carers.  Rachael.Mcmullen@standrewsfontmell.co.uk
