‘Believe, Thrive, Learn, Shine’
At St Andrew’s we believe it is possible for all to achieve and we aim for the children to thrive in a successful learning environment. We actively seek to provide opportunities for our pupils to shine and flourish in a variety of ways. We recognise individual talents and encourage these.
We aim to identify those pupils in our student body who have a special educational need (SEN) – as defined by the Code of Practice (2014) – and to provide support to enable these students to thrive. We establish a graduated approach to SEN through the ‘Assess, Plan, Do and Review cycle’ and aim for this way of working to be the foundation of SEN practice throughout our school.
If you have any queries, please don’t hesitate to contact our SENDCo Mrs Jessica Depledge via our school office.
Special Educational Needs and Disability
At St Andrew’s we use the definition for SEN and for disability from the SEND Code of Practice (2014) and the Equality Act (2010). This states that:
SEN
“A child or young person has special educational needs if he or she has a learning difficulty or disability which calls for special educational provision to be made for him or her. A learning difficulty or disability is a significantly greater difficulty in learning than the majority of others of the same age. Special educational provision means educational or training provision that is additional to, or different from, which is made generally for others of the same age in a mainstream setting in England.”
Disability
“Many children and young people who have SEN may have a disability under the Equality Act 2010 -that is ‘A physical or mental impairment which has a long-term and substantial adverse effect on their ability to carry out normal day-to-day activities.”
Local Offer and more information
As of September 2014 every Local Authority is required to publish information about services that they expect to be available in their area for children and young people who have special educational needs and/or disabilities (SEND). This is known as the ‘Local Offer.’
